How I Met Your Mother Music
- Spit on a Stranger sung by Kathryn Williams ( episode closer…a great call back to Drumroll Please from Season 1. Then it was by Pavement, I’m not 100% on this but I think it’s Kathryn Williams)
Sorry all, I had to work late tonight but my good friend Jenn is going to fill in tonight. I did get to watch “Ducky Tie” just now and loved it. I’m anxious to see what everyone else thinks… I give you the Amazing Jenn:
Hey folks, Jenn here, but some of you may know me from the Lusty Leopard as Jenniac, recapping tonight’s episode of Ducky Tie. Was it just me or was this the longest week ever? I guess maybe I felt spoiled having two new episodes back to back last week and then having to wait ‘til tonight. However the wait was worth it. I spent all week thinking about what having Victoria back meant and how Carter said this was one of his favorite episodes ever (Carter said it on the HIMYM Podcast – I suggest you all check them out). I knew going in that Victoria wasn’t going to be the mother, I wish she could have actually been in the running – however the writers have told us things about the mother that made it being Victoria impossible.
The two main storylines tonight (well 3 if you count each of Lily’s breast’s individually) are the Duck Breast Bet (clever I know) and the return of Victoria.
I’m glad the Ducky Tie folklore was revealed quickly from last week, I think the writers need to be careful not to open more stories than they can reasonably close. I know that if we get to the series finale one day and I still don’t see a final slap or something I’ll be pissed. I love all the bets between the gang and the terms are always fantastic. I’m sure that Barney plotted this for years (just liked with the exploding meatball sub), however he plans yet again got foiled, however he did get to at least see Lily’s boobs before officially losing the bet. Barney’s agony in wearing the same tie for a year should prove to be interesting – it also proves that the flashforward to the Xíng háishì bùxíngl game will be within the year of Barney’s tie wearing.
I loved every scene between Ted and Victoria. Their chemistry and dialogue was great. I wonder how long it took them to nail down the Claus/Class conversation – however long it was worth it because it was brilliant. I’m glad that Ted and Victoria got closure, but I was so sad to see Victoria go. They just seem to really “get” each other which is something I’ve missed with all of Ted’s other girlfriends (including Robin). Maybe it’s because Ted and Victoria took the time to know each other’s souls before doing the horizontal cha-cha, just sayin’. It seems that Victoria will be the first of a few ghosts (or slutty pumpkins) from Ted’s past to help him get back on track to meeting the mother.
Legendary Lines
- Barney: Duck, duck, gross. Hashtag burn, Hashtag duck tie slams, hashtag stinson rocks or @broslife would say : duck, duck, gross #burn #ducktieslams #stinsonrocks.
- Ted: You make it sound like I dated a series of Stieg Larsson novels.
- Lily: I’m in that sweet spot where the chestal area knows I’m pregnant, but hasn’t told the downstairs neighbors.
- Marshall: I’m sorry pal, but he party in my wife’s sweater is a private event and I’m the bouncer.
- Robin: Dude I think they’s the bouncers.
- Marshall: Let the dinnertainment begin!
- Barney: Hashtag burn, hashtag your tie is still dumb #hashtag REFILL!
- Ted: I don’t know it sounds pretty intimate. – after Victoria tells him about her engagement and how he should go (I loved how quick Ted was with that response)
- Robin: Yeah it stays with ya, his email reminders don’t help.
- Victoria: I let you come wash my dishes. I said my oven needed cleaning. I invited you into a porno.
- Ted: Just tell me the kind of coin. (FILTHY)
Favorite Moments
- The gang guesses which girl from Ted’s past he ran into. What a nice little stroll down memory lane that was along with a bunch of other callbacks throughout the episode.
- Robin’s account of Ted running into Victoria with old timey music
- Shinjitsu sneezing cues and Marshall’s realization of Barney’s subliminal mind control.
- Re-return of the Bangity Bang song.
- Lily and Barney boob bet terms negotiation.
- Lily’s realization that Barney is hustling them.
- Robin talking through all the steps Barney would needed to have taken to hustle them.
- Flashback of the bounce house Barney had in Marshall and Lily’s apartment.
- The cat Mai Tai cups at Shinjitsu.
- Ted licking the dishes – I loved how juvenile it was!
- The drumroll between Victoria and Ted until they went and ruined it by actually kissing.
- Ted’s back to everyone in the alley and his commentary and questions.
- Barney in the duck tie and Robin throwing food at Barney’s tie to feed the ducks.
Lingering Questions
- What is a fried rice beating heart?
- Why do they keep trying to make Lily’s “sonovabeetch” a thing?
- Why did Robin keep changing the subject back to the Ted/Victoria story? Did she want Ted and Victoria to be together so should wouldn’t have to think about her and Ted anymore?
- Is Robin the real reason why Ted and Victoria as well as all of his other relationships haven’t worked?
- When are Ted, Barney and Robin going to realize that their situation doesn’t work?

I absolutely loved tonight’s episode. It had it all, it was extremely funny, added new lore, wrapped up some lose ends and as romantic/heartbreaking all at the same time. Great episode IMHO.
Lily’s boobs looked amazing.
I liked the episode. It was good to have an actual conclusion to the Victoria storyline. The ending got me a little worried though. I love Ted/Robin/Barney.
I am a little let down. Great episode, don’t get me wrong – I was just wishful that Victoria really would be the one. But now it seems as if that is nothing more than a glimmer of hope. I don’t know what they were hinting at, at the end of the episode, but I really hope that ‘Aunt Robbin’ doesn’t wind up being the mother. I like Ted and Robin as friends. So, my question now is…. Is Victoria done and out of the picture for good? Or is there a slim hope of potential there? Any feedback would bs greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Though I was let down, it was a great episode.
Phenomenal episode. One of the reasons I loved Victoria so much was because Ted was his total lovestruck, fate-ridden self around her. He acts like he did in the beginning of the series and I love that Ted. This episode was great…had a little bit of everything in it.
One thought I had about the end part in regards to Robin – what if it references Barney and Robin getting engaged at some point in this season? I mean it’s one thing for Ted to be OK with them dating and QUITE another for Ted to be OK with them getting married. I could see Ted struggling with this for a few episodes before finally being able to let Robin go, which sets him up perfectly for meeting the mother because the love triangle will be gone!
I think Victoria as the mother was done & dusted because he has to meet the mother at Barney’s wedding (same reasoning for Robin).
When the gang was going through Ted’s past girls, Barney said “the girl who ruined a photo with Slash”.
Have we seen this girl? Have I forgotten this episode?
Such a great episode
Yeah that was the season 5 episode where Ted brought someone to Lily’s birthday and she got all pissed. I think it was called Say Cheese. At the end Lily was playing “Name that bitch” remember now?
At first I was upset Ted was talking about believing in fate so much and all that junk at first, but then I thought about it more and I wonder if he was just having revertago from being around Victoria again. Who, btw, looks soooo much hotter than she did in Season one. I really liked the episode though, it was well rounded and very classic HIMYM. I really liked the Close Clause bit as well.
Hmm. Nope, and that’s why I have DVDs
Yep, there she is. Ruined the picture with Slash. At least she was cute.
Well, i think the episode was awesome. I mean, a lot has changed. And Barney has certainly “matured”
But all in all, it was amazing!
you mean sonofabeetch isn’t a thing?
Additional Legendary Line: “It’s like you have a butt on your chest.”
Also, a fried rice beating heart is when they make the fried rice into a heart shape, light it on fine, and then stick the spatula under the rice-heart and move it up and down to make it look like the heart is beating. I thought it was hilarious when they listed the tricks because I’ve seen every one of those tricks in my two times at that type of restaurant.
Great episode! I’m pretty terrified about the interruption of the robin/Ted/Barney friendship, though.
FAVOURITE MOMENT: The old man that gets the punch scoop in the head, when Ted throws it! (Seen in the background when Ted apologises to Victoria)
I just saw something. You know that part where Ted was talking to Victoria, and he was all like, ‘Let’s skip the obligatory…’? In the background, Leonard the old guy got hit by the ladle which Ted tossed as he was nervous about seeing Victoria again. LOL.
AND OH GOD VICTORIA!!!
Just finished watching this episode. ANd honestly so far, out of episode 1,2 and 3. Episode 3 was AWESOME. really entertaining! And a good point made by victoria about Robin! ;D
AMAZING. the episode was a genis. It had a bit of evrything and thats what really made it an awesome episode. OUt of all the 3 so far. I think that this one is pretty entertaining.
Victoria’s part was somewhat amusing, even though it was for a while. She did make a point, which i also beileve may be the reason to Ted’s love problems.
The question is, Who’s Barneys bride? ;D
Oh didn’t see your comment! Haha!
Great episode – but there’s no way Victoria’s going to marry Claus. I bet she’s catching that bus to break up with him. I’m not saying that Victoria is the mother – she isn’t – but since we’re seeing her again at some point anyway, I’d like to lay down the chips for her not being married.
Great subplot – nice to see an episode with everybody together rather than separated into two groups.
I’m bummed because I have a situation going on where I am friends with three of my exes and we occasionaly hang out all together. It is not a problem! Maybe it would be a problem for Ted though.
CLAUS? Is your Claus the kind of close Claus from your class? (THE ENTIRE SCENE IS AMAZING)
This is why the actors rule!
The butt on your chest line was in my notes, but as a busty lady I didn’t laugh enough to make the cut since I’ve heard that before.
in my visits for dinnertainment I’ve never see the heart. Challenge accepted.
it just always feels so forced to me. they have so many other “things” i don’t know whyt hey keep doing sonovabeetch. I’ve never liked it. – Jenniac
I loved this episode it was amazing! This series just keeps getting better and better…BTW does anyone know where Victoria’s purple dress is from? I think it looks amazing and would love to have my bridesmaids in a dress like this!!
I know we are only 3 episodes in, but It seems like season 7 is going to focus on Ted’s character development similar to Barney’s development last season.
I agree with the “sonovabeetch”. Maybe it looked good on paper but hopefully the writers realize that it’s not catching on.
Since Ted said that Victoria was right that him, Barney, and Robin hanging out together wouldn’t work; I think she’s right about Robin being the reason behind Ted’s failed relationships. My guess is that at the end of the season Ted will realize this and cause a conflict with Robin which will arc back nicely to the beginning of the season.
Will Marshall and Lilly have their baby this season? Maybe it will be in the finale?
“Barney’s agony in wearing the same tie for a year should prove to be interesting – it also proves that the flashforward to the Xíng háishì bùxíngl game will be within the year of Barney’s tie wearing.”
It also proves that Barney’s wedding takes place after this bet is up, since he is struggling with which tie to wear for his own wedding (unless Marshall/Lily gave him a free pass on that day.)
Also, just a sidenote: a female-recorded version of Spit On A Stranger was playing in the background, when Victoria was going to get on the bus in the end of the episode. The version by Pavement is playing in Drumroll, Please (Season 1 Episode 13) when Ted walks into the bakery and Victoria runs up to him.
I love how Barney has to wear the Duck tie for an entire year. He loves his suits and the tie combo that goes with the suit is, let just say Legen (wait for it)….. DARY. I’m looking forward to the jokes and the torture Barney will go through because of it.
Love Victoria in this episode and I kind of wanted there to be a little more of the Ted/Victoria thing. They get each other. I want to believe there will be more of her in future episodes but I am really rooting for Ted to be where he needs to be to meet the mother and have the amazing (don’t we wish we all had it) romance that we know his character is capable of. I only hope that when the series ends that it doesn’t end with him meeting her and Good-bye. I hope we get to see the relationship and why she is THE ONE.
Victoria was supposed to be the mother if the series didn’t get picked up for a Season 2 btw. I read that somewhere…..
Oh my lorrrrddddd!!!
Well I’m going to skip over the other crap and just get to the point.
So, after it aired, I watched this episode 3 times.
The first time, I thought she was saying that we were going to be left with a Ted-Robin ending, which caused me to scream at the TV in pissedness. I mean, Ted and Robin were a great couple, but I’ve wasted way too much of my time on the show for it to end that way.
So I called a few friends, and they all said that she meant BARNEY and Robin get together. So after that craziness, I watched it again. And wow….I’d missed something really huge. Of course, not huge enough to make me see the light.
I rewinded it and watched it a third time, and I’ve come to a conclusion.
Barney and Robin ARE the wedding couple. There is no way around it. This episode was their way of letting us know.
Any protests? She said the three exes hanging out just as friends doesn’t work…and she was right.
can i get a hell yeah?
naiiiiiiiled it!
Can someone please tell me if it has been confirmed that Victoria is not the mother? I’ve been watching the show since day 1, and can’t find a reason to completely rule her out. Did I miss something? Even with the yellow umbrella, and Ted dating his futures wife’s roommate, and even the girl in the classroom, that doesn’t eliminate Victoria in my opinion. We don’t know what she really did after she left for Germany, and it seemed as if that info was left out intentionally. Have the creators of the show ruled her out, or is that more an opinion of some of the fans? Some of the fans still believe she’s in the running. Please let me know. Thanks!
you just said everthing i was thinking i would be very sad if they end it with thats how i met your mother i want to see ted falling in love with her! i want to see there wedding as fans we deserve a season after he meets her! i think it would be cool if ted is dating the “mother” we dont know its her in till he pops the question and ted says and kids thats how i met your mother! so cute 🙂
yes we have its SEASON 5 EP. 18 SAY CHEESE When Ted ruins Lily’s birthday dinner celebration by bringing a date, Lily goes to great lengths to keep her out of the traditional photo she takes every year of the gang. they end up playing lets name that b*** “game” when they look at all of the group photos of the past and how ted has some random girl in everyone it will be the pic. of barneys birthday party at the bar! 🙂 just wach this ep. last-night !!!
Did Ted say he met the future mother at “a wedding” or at “Barney’s wedding”? Because remember, Ted met Victoria at Claudia’s wedding, thus if it’s “a wedding”, Victoria *might* still be in the running…. Also, they could meet again at Barney’s wedding since she could be the baker for Barney’s wedding, right?
PS. I think there’s a reason why the writers plotted Victoria “found” the wedding ring in Claus sock drawer instead of she’s actually engaged. Maybe it wasn’t a wedding ring? Or something might go wrong along the way?
Yea, I loved that callback… I think this version way by Kathryn Williams..it’s noted here and on the Season 7 music page.
@7b903766671a6f56e20e0a7d4b0387c2:disqus – I think it was said (on the show, not a podcast or website) that the mother has blonde hair. I think that’s why people (myself included) thought Zoey would be the mother.
completely agree with ‘sonovabeetch’ it’s my least favorite catch phrase so far…
I wonder if Victoria’s foreshadowing has more to do with Ted or Barney though?
I’ll love for you to elaborate more on your certainty of what Victoria was saying about Barney and Robin – Jenniac
Thanks for clarifying. I did not pick up on that. I’d say it’s still pretty wide open at this point – and the writers can twist it any way they want it. I’m new to this site, and really like the discussions, along with the episode recaps by the site’s creator. Nice job!
I really dont think that the mother is “blonde” if you remember back i think season 4 ep/ 5 (shelter island) future ted sayed and thats how i met your mother if stella did not leave him well the kids had blonde hair and we know duh! his kids are “burnett” so i think thats a clue in its-self that the “mother” is in fact a “burnett”
New here too and agree; this site is great!
I thought the blonde reference was made during the episode he goes on a date with Cindy’s (Rachel Bilson). The Mother is her roommate and Ted mentions that while at Cindy’s apartment he sees the Mother/his future wife for a brief moment. I thought he said that he only saw her feet and blonde hair. I’m going to re-watch the episode but I guess I was wrong.
It was separated into two groups; the groups are “People Who are Allowed to See Lily’s Boobs” and “Ted.”
This may be one of my favorite comments ever on my site. True Story.
agreed with Jenn. it’s a forced thing…they they should let die… much like the laughs do every time HIMYM uses it 😉
no. in that ep am sure that all TED says is he saw her “foot” and than he said something like she could have been a foot model. also if you recall when they show her walking in to her room her hair was up in a towel so he could’int have see her hair! i dont think there have been any clues to the mother as having blonde hair. here is a part of a comment i post a couple of days ago about this _ I really dont think that the mother is “blonde” if you remember back i think season 4 ep/ 5 (shelter island) future ted sayed and thats how i met your mother if stella did not leave him well the kids had blonde hair and we know duh! his kids are “burnett” so i think thats a clue in its-self that the “mother” is in fact a “burnett” 🙂
I might actually be truly insane, but I’m pretty sure that when she was talking about a Ted-Robin thing, it was a double meaning. “She is so much bigger in your life than you realize.” I felt like that was more directed at Barney than Ted in a way. Then there was the whole thing where she said “This thing you’re doing? You robin and barney? where you hang out at the bar every night? that doesn’t work.” A couple other people thought that meant that the friendship doesn’t work, but we all know thats crazy. Future Ted was saying that their “just friends” situation doesn’t work because Robin has feeling for Barney and vis a vis.
Now I get it. Has anyone of you ever noted, that when the gang is eating anything with chopsticks, Barney never gets anything into his mouth. The food always falls off. I always thought that was a funny little thing, but now it turns out, that was probably also for this hustle.
Uh, what flash forward are you talking about? The Xíng háishì bùxíngl game thing?
Okay, I just saw it. I wasn’t paying attention to the previous episode.
