I’m not really talking about the tie ~Barney
It seems our wait for Season 7 is finally over. I’m not sure what everyone thought about the premiere but regardless of like or not, there were plenty of hook for the rest of the season. Let’s get down to it…
How I Met Your Mother Music
- Groove Is In the Heart – Deee Lite (plays during Robin & Barney’s big wedding dance)
I know, I know…the show is about Ted and how he meets the mother of his kids. However, as we all know after 6 Seasons, it not just that, but that in excruciating, but hilarious detail. And judging from how season 7 begins, that seems to be the same path. Ted begins by saying how important Barney’s wedding is…but you have to ask yourself, do we also equate that with how important Robin is? I mean the entire show started with Ted meeting Robin, so in my mind he had to meet Robin in order to meet the mother.
From the very beginning of the episode, it’s pretty clear that Barney isn’t talking about the tie & is having what may or may not be pre wedding jitters. It’s really stinking tuff to guess at all this without full context. Plus the crafty writers at How I Met Your Mother just love to mess with fans. I feel like our choices of Brides are pretty clear, at least “currently”. Either Barney is marrying Nora and wondering if not choosing Robin was a mistake or vice versa. And as of this episode* (I’m wrong on occasions), I’ve gotta say the Bride looks to be Robin. Consider this, why would the bride ask for Ted? It’s possible that Nora could be the bride and simply want to know how Barney is doing, but why not just ask Lily or someone else to check?
From the way Robin feeds Barney her true feels, despite helping him with Nora, I think this will definitely come to Barney’s attention before we see the wedding take place. The question is, does this happen and Barney decides to marry Robin or doe this happen and make Barney question his decision right before the wedding… or does this not happen at all and I’ve had too many beers tonight?
I know that I should say something about Lily & Marshall’s baby, but besides providing some funny line, I really don’t care. If I’m in the minority on this then I’ll suck it up but I don’t think I am.
On a different note, other than the colors & the ending…did anyone feel that Punchy’s wedding was that bad? I men open bar, lots of lady’s, Smosby moments… on a slightly separate note, I really thought “someone” from Ted’s past would show up in this episode… not in “the Naked Truth”… touché HIMYM.
Legendary Lines
Ted:…from the ashes of your statistically likely divorce…
Barney: Hello Cleveland the last person to screw you this hard and disappear was LeBron James.
Ted: My date for tonight is a sticky magazine
Robin: Sounds like high school again… it was right there.
Lily: In 9 month ill be pushing a pumpkin headed Erikson baby out of my hoo-ha daddy can handle a few extra cocktails.
Robin: If you have chemistry you only need one other thing – timing. But timing is a bitch.
Lily: You are drinking for two tonight.
Marshall: I will do this for the child…
Favorite Moments
- Lots of fake outs. Just as you would see the perfect moment for Marshall to ruin Punchy’s wedding, NOPE!
- That dance! It easily goes in my favorite HIMYM moments all all time.
- Carl! Plus Carl the Bartender knows/knew about baby Erikson before any of their friends. Nice touch.
- Old Ted’s reminders that this isn’t near over… while I want to know who the mother is, I hope so to.
- Classic Shmosby. Gotta love Ted’s toasts & Autotune videos…but WHERE ARE THEY ON YOUTUBE! sorry to yell, but really?
Lingering Questions
- The big question is obvious, Who is Barney Marrying?
- Old Ted referenced, many times that this is no where near over. Think they are talking to anyone in particular? Think that is a message that we are going past Season 8 or just to don’t worry about it?
- Do you buy that Barney is or is becoming a different man?
- More HIMYM folklore, in the tradition of the pineapple, the slutty pumpkin, the goat and the green dress… I give you the ducky tie.
That’s all I’ve got the this one, what did you think?
Barney is Ted’s best bro (‘Uncle Barney’). If Robin is the bride, having Ted’s kids call her ‘Aunt Robin’ as she’s been referred to quite frequently isn’t a far stretch of the imagination, no? 😉
Awesome episode. I’m excited for this season, it’s looking like it’ll be a good one. I think you’re on to something with why the bride asked to see Ted. Remember how Robin asked Ted to be her best man? That could be something. Idk, I’m not big on coming up with theories but that seems to be plausible.
I feel like she would be ‘Aunt Robin’ either way…but it fit’s in that care for sure
Does this “Ducky Tie” mean we’re going to have another love interest for Barney this season? I know the writers have said that Robin and Nora are not the only possible brides to be floating about this season – but if they are going to force another girl into the picture, I find it strange to write her off in the first episode.
Or it’s just a tie with ducks on. 🙂
Anyone else feel the Ted/Robin moment was remarkably similar to the Season 2 Finale/Season 3 Primere? Season 3 was big for Ted, maybe this season will be equally big for Robin!
What about if he is marrying nora but at the last minute runs off with robin and marries her, also I think ted is going to marry barneys sister might explain the Aunt Robin thing
So good to have the show back. As a Clevelander, I enjoy the Cleveland references. My favorite moment was Ted talking to Robin about how he stopped believing. That was something I could really identify with.
I also think that Robin is the bride – which means that Ted would be best man to both of them. Makes perfect sense.
As much as the whole Barney’s Sister thing goes, I really REALLY dont want that to happen 😛
I could watch that dance, all day.
I love it when shows break the 4th wall, and HIMYM have now done it. Yay!.
It’s a tie with ducks on it, literally. It’s marshall’s and he and lily make some bet with barney and if they win he has to wear it or something.
That’ll be either next week or two weeks from now.
Smosby remix is on the CBS page for HIMYM!!!!
I think you both have great supporting points there… I always wonder how much the writes like to screw with us.
It’s about time!
Agreed. I think it’s possible and had evidence but honestly the sister & the bump girl, I’ve always felt they were too obvious. HIMYM writers seem more crafty than that.
Ok, what about the song that’s right after the dance?
In the background, guitar thingy. Anyone? 🙂
It’s too early to assume the bride is robin or nora (who i’m hoping it is) We were told that the wedding was going to be the first episode of this Season yet it was actually Punchy and Kelly’s.
What’s the 4th wall?
Really loved this, everything I was hoping for in a season opener. I need to rewatch once my internet connection stops being so slow (took over an hour for each ep to load…normally it’s almost instant), but my initial thoughts are here. (Actually, my initial thoughts were something along the lines of “aaaaaaah, oh my goodness, eeeeek, that was amazing, Robin’s the bride?!?!” but this is my slightly calmer response thanks to a 24 hour gap and a day at work!)
You make an interesting point about the importance of Robin in meeting the Mother – I had always just assumed that she was important in Ted’s development as a person, to be who he is when he meets the Mother. But I think you’re right, there’s more to it than that…very interesting and intriguing.
The highlights of the episode for me were the Barney/Robin scenes (of course!) and the Ted/Robin balcony scene. Barney & Robin were just HOT. I could watch that dance over and over. The chemistry…they were sizzling. Can’t believe they didn’t kiss at the end. It was heartbreaking when she was telling him how she felt, brought a tear to my eye. 🙁 Poor Robin, she has this tough “I don’t want to get married, I like guns” exterior at times, but she’s a big softy.
Then I was just recovering from my teary Barney/Robin moment, and there was the scene on the balcony with Ted. One of the things I really love about this show is they don’t forget things like relationships – Ted and Robin, although not together for ages and never will be again (no matter how much I hope they won’t break up again every time I watch Something Blue!), are still clearly very important to each other. (Four years after a break up, a lot of other shows would have us believe it never happened…) The whole conversation was so them, it fitted perfectly. And really brought a tear to my eye again. I love them as friends. Also enjoyed the call-back to the 40-marriage deal. And loved Robin’s quip. “Unrelated, do architects make much money?” “An impressively mediocre amount.” “Dammit!”
Marshall & Lily were cute, and Marshall & Lily-like in this episode, but the above was much more exciting to me!
Even more exciting than everything else though…”Ted, the bride would like to see you.” Does this mean it’s Robin?! She did ask him to be her best man, after all…so it would make sense. But then again, are they just throwing us a red herring? I literally screamed at the screen when Lily said that, it seemed so clearly Robin. Which would be amazing! (Although not so amazing since we’ve been told the wedding doesn’t go well…) But as I say, now I’m not so sure, I have a feeling they know fans would notice something like that, and so are trying to confuse us…hmm…
As to your question of whether we’re going past S8 – I really hope not. Don’t get me wrong, I love this show so much, I don’t want to see it end, and I feel like there could be a lot more to tell. But I’ve watched shows I love go on too long, and end nowhere near as good as they once were. I don’t want that to happen to HIMYM. I would much rather end at the end of S8, with them knowing that’s all they have so wrapping everything up and finishing it off properly, giving it the ending that the characters and the fans deserve. I actually got a real feeling in these first two episodes that they were starting to do that, but more on that next…
…see you on the ep2 page soon!
Ooh, good point – very similar look to it, now that you mention it. Interesting…
Why would the bride want to see Ted unless she is Robin? After all, Robin did ask Ted to be her best man.
It’s a stage term used for television as well that references the actors normal obliviousness to the fourth wall of the room that represents the audience for stage or where the cameras are for the screen. When actors break the fourth wall they look at the audience and say something, or look right into the camera.
thank you!!!!!
I don’t think I was “reading too much into things”, I was just wondering whether this was an insight to one of the other options (that we know is coming) this season. I’m quite convinced it’s a tie with ducks now, since it has been pointed out in the flash forward scene.
(I’m with Marshall, though – Rabbits are good, Duck are bad!) 🙂
You kinda just said everything i felt about the ep. to! the only thing is i love this show so much that it will be super sad to see it end i think they could go on to a least 10 seasons and still give us the perfect ending but we met the mother some time in season 8 and fall in love with her in season 9 they get marry and may be see the first child born in season 10 and then some really cool fashbacks of inportant events that happen when teds kid were little see them with marshall&lillys kids and see them do some of those things with “aunt robin” that we see in there drawings. that would be kinda cool to see. 🙂
Sorry if what I said was misinterpreted – I meant that what I was saying was possibly reading too much into things, not what you were saying. 🙂
