HIMYM s4e19 – Murtaug

 himym_Murtaugh_Discussion_best there is

How I Met  Your Mother was nothing short of gold tonight. It seemed at first like a Barney centric episode, and the bulk of the story was, but the secondary from Marshall & Lily was excellent. It’s always amusing to me to see how they will try to hide Alyson Hannigan’s baby bump…a guitar, orange slices, basketballs? it’s like a magic show.  Angry Marshall was hilarious. When Marshall threw the basketball at the kid and yelled at him falling down I was rolling. Plus the Teen Wolf reference was classic. Who doesn’t love 80’s cult movies. Speaking of which, did I read the opening sequence as a reference to Top Gun?

Robin helping Barney with the list was so funny. They really to work well together. The whole thing brought back memories of Zip, Zip, Zip and why Robin and Barney would be a great couple. The two person answering marching message was well thought out, and Ted look of disgust is priceless.

As far as Danny Glover goes, I’m not sure that really counts as a guest appearence though who would ever think of doing an entire eposide aroung his Sgt. Murtaugh character…those guys that write for HIMYM…that’s who. And it worked well.

All and all the story didn’t really advance anywhere… not career choices, relationship news whatever, but lots of laughs were had by all and when you come away your time really doesn’t feel wasted.

That’s my 2 cents… what did the rest of you think?

HIMYM Season 4 Episode 18 – Old King Clancy

himym_old_king_clancy_stand_up

How I Met  Your Mother’s time shift tonight threw me a bit, though it was cool to get to watch “The Bracket” again after the new episode. There seems to be a theme going of people looking out for Ted. Almost like he is a little kid who still needs that in a lot of ways. Last week Lily played the mom role to Ted in The Front Porch, looking out for his bad relationship choices and this week Marshall and Barney do it with his job. Both time Ted ends up being completely cool with it and actually being grateful. Not sure how “real world” that would be but it was at least entertaining. Either way, the whole elaborate lie that comes out to be a good thing is a slightly overdone plot, even if HIMYM does it well.

This ep was decent but not that memorable, a lot of Canadian comedy for sure. In fact, the who sub plotline with sexual euphemisms was funnier than the main plotline of Ted’s job. I do with they would have made the guessing more like a game of clue, plus since Marshall is so awesome at games he should have guesses it. The Snatch-style name cards for the headquarters task force was funny and the security footage of Barney had me laughing pretty hard. Then again, Classic Barney is always funny, no matter how much I think he and Robin should be together. I just like episodes that have moments that seem to stick out…like when we first saw the Awesomeness Poster, the hot crazy scale, the blue horn, or even the Bracket… things like that. This episode was funny but too forgettable. Was I alone on this? What did everyone else think?

HIMYM Season 4 Episode 17 – The Front Porch

himym_front_porch_show_friends

When a show is so entertaining that you can’t even stop to write notes then you know it’s good. This was possibly one of the strongest episodes this season.  So many funny gags, it was actually hard to focus on the story with Robin’s show going on in the background. Barney being swayed to Marshall’s way of thinking about sleepwear was excellent, also the call out to the flying sequence form The Big Lebowski was cool. Barney’s jokes about the nightshirt were excellent ( Scrooge!, Willy Wonka, accessorizing…) and it was so sweet to see his how his fantasy played out in the re-return.

Despite Lily’s actions in Ted’s relationships, I think she was doing it for the right reasons. Watching her and Ted do the “A Few Good Men” scene was funny. Lily could totally play Colonel Nathan R. Jessup if they ever do a remake. The only think I didn’t like was the Ted/Robin pact at the end, because I know it’s just gonna set off the Ted & Robin will be together crowd. You think some of my theories are out there, wait till they get going. I have to diagram things just to follow. Plus I’m not wild about the possibility of playing that story line again before we see anything come of a possible Barney/Robin thing. Anyone else wonder why Barney isn’t in any of Lily’s front porch scenes?

What did you all think?

HIMYM Season 4 Episode 16 – Sorry Bro

My Thoughts:

Lily & Marshall did a great job of making me hate Karen (Laura Prepon from That ‘70s show). Hope that is the point long term but rumor has it she will be back for a few more eps. Sorry Bro was good overall. The way that it kept going back and forth between the Ted/Karen story and Marshall’s no pants story was pretty cool each using the other to try and avoid more details. Nothing more on the Robin/Barney story line but we will get more on that according to an open Q&A with Carter Bays (possible spoilers). Overall the whole show was kinds of misdirection. I mean, we start off with learning more about Robin’s new morning show (4am wow!) and then they brush right past it to not be mentioned again. Also while Marashall’s story wasn’t quite as interesting as Ted’s, his scenes carried the episode. Especially when he was dressed up for wrestling. Legendary. Also cool to see some past guest and I always love it when Wendy the Waitress (Charlene Amoia) is on the show. Everyone loves Wendy. So many great laughs in this episode. Classic How I Met Your Mother. What did everyone else think?

HIMYM Season 4 Episode 15 – The Stinsons

My Thoughts:

The first time I watched this episode I was really not that impressed, but once I started listing my favorite moments and quoted I realized it was a pretty funny episode. It didn’t seem to rushed and that was nice, I hate it when sitcoms try to pack in too much and have to gloss over good material. Barney was awesome, and typical Barney. It was hilarious to see the other side of him though. We already knew Marshall was a momma’s boy, but to think that Barney is one was cool. I do think that his mother’ advice will play a big part in coming episodes, if only for a back story reason. The writers hinted a bit at it with the looks he exchanged with Robin.

Good episode honestly. While Ted calls it “One of the strangest nights of their life”, it was a good one. Not your typical HIMYM episode, but lots of back story and connections from past and possibly for the future. And also, Barney always roots for the bad guy. Legendary.

HIMYM Season 4 Episode 14 – The Possimpible

My Thoughts:

Barney’s video resume was hilarious…I think I need to make one, he should probably get a job just for his mad editing skills. Plus there are two sites that you might want to be aware of and should definitely check out I’ll mention them in my recap or you can visit the post liked above. The think I hate about HIMYM is that since it’s only a 30 minute show, everything always seems rushed, not bad mind you…rushed. And despite knowing they had planned on showing Lily’s baby bump it was still funny to see how, makes you wonder if they will have to show Robin’s once she starts to show. Marshall’s dancing issue was a nice gag. And Dr.X made me embarrassed for poor ted…Lame, not awesome, but very funny. Past that, I would love to see the video resume Barney made for Robin, think they will ever show it?

the Perfection Motivational Poster

himym_perfection_season4

SO if you have been around here long or watched How I Met Your Mother for any length of time then you are probably familiar with the Awesomeness Poster and the legendary poster collection in Barney’s office. Despite the Awesomeness poster being the most famous, I have always thought the coolest was the Perfection poster. The poster was there in Season 1 & 2, gone from the walls in Season 3 and back but in a different spot in Season 4! There has never been a 100%  positive id on the catch phrase but I’m fairly certain it says:

It is not good enough to win, everyone else should lose

It’s either everybody or everyone. More to the point though, it’s not exact but I’m building my own ultimate motivational poster collection like Barney Stinson’s and thought that, like the awesomeness poster, it was time to build the Perfection Poster…so, now available from the be awesome instead store is the perfection motivational poster. Try to control yourselves.

HIMYM Season 4 Episode 13 – Three Days of Snow

HIMYM_ThreeDaysofSnow_Barney_Ted My Thoughts: Despite it being more of a filler episode and leaving out any of the Robin and Barney story line from Benefits (Season 4 Episode 12), this was a really funny episode.  What’s more is that Carl and Ranjit are back!  The three story lines worked well and I loved the way they played together… it almost reminded me of a Seinfeld (another recurring theme?) Also, it seems someone heard or cries and the time sequences were well done this time.

HIMYM Season 4 – Episode 12 – Benefits

Lily was right, when two exes decide to just be casual, someone always gets hurt. But this time, it was just not one of us. ~Ted

My Thoughts:

Is How I Met Your Mother taking some cues from Scrubs? The episode was truly funny but threw in enough to make you feel a little emotional about friendship. Past that, I do feel like we have seen similar “relational” story lines in Scrubs and Seinfeld…hello anybody? Despite that as well as my objections and strong feeling about playing the Ted & Robin card again, I liked the way the episode played out as a whole. It left the door completely wide open for a Robin and Barney thing and hopefully closed the door for good on Ted & Robin. what’s more is despite being a “self contained” episode it gives you enough of an ongoing story line to make it seem like the same series.

I wasn’t thought the reality stars guest spots would be pretty lame, they were enough of a sub plot to be entertaining but not annoying. Plus Marshall made fun of Kim Kardashian. Let me also take a moment to request more Carl and especially Wendy!

Season 4 Episode 11: Little Minnesota

himym_little_minnesota_1

My Thoughts:

This episode of How I Met Your Mother was done very well. The way the character’s were split was a new twist and I loved the Marshall/Robin story line. always new ground to explore I suppose.

Erin Cahill was a cool choice for Ted’s little sis and played the part well. She and Barney (the rest of the cast too) had some decent chemistry too. I wonder if they will bring her back more this season since she will be in New York (trying not to give too much away until later). Sadly, there was a quick look at Barney’s office posters (though I only saw focus) but no Awesomeness Poster, despite finally getting a shot of his office this season.
